F-14A_05.jpg - F-14A having flown into SFO was then barged across the Bay to Pier 3 where the Hornet is berthed. The Tomcat, a two seat, twin engine, variable swept wing aircraft, was the Navy's primary air superiority fighter, fleet defense interceptor and tactical reconnaissance platorm from 1974 to 2006. Developed after the F-111B was scrubbed and was the first of several teen series fighters designed based on the experience gained against MIGs during the Vietnam War. It replaced the venerable F-4 Phantom and was itself replaced by the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet.
